Hi, I'm Paula Shepherd, I went to college to get a good job and make a lot of money. Back then, no one talked about doing what you love. And while I successfully climbed the corporate ladder, I felt like there was something missing. Today, I get to help ambitious women go from entrepreneur to confident CEO of their lives and businesses. I created this podcast to share what I've learned with you to make your journey just a little easier, and to connect you with other incredible business owners who took a chance on themselves and who they are becoming. So whether you're just getting started, are all in for just want to hear a friendly voice. Come on in and sit with us. Now, let's dive in.

Paula Shepherd  02:36

I am just coming back from a seven day social media detox over the holidays. And if you've never done this before, I highly recommend it. It's something that I typically do on the weekends. But seven days is much more extended than I've done probably over the last year. Simply because I can't travel. And not being able to travel means I'm not going on vacations outside of my home and in other countries and across the country. So I just thought, you know what, let's do a little bit of an experiment, see what happens. Because the majority of my business is through repeat clients and referrals. And that is mainly because I click care so deeply about the client experience. Now, I'm going to explain to you one, what things look like kind of behind the curtain when I was stepping into this. I'm going to tell you what I did, how that looked how I felt. And I'm also going to share with you why this was even possible in the first place. So a little bit of background. Of course, kids are off of school and you know, men, Austin, Texas, kids are off of school for the equivalent of about two and a half weeks now.

Paula Shepherd  04:01

I thought well, maybe I could still work. Yeah, I could. But I started my business so I can be more present. Yes, that is what I did. And this was exactly the reason the way that I could demonstrate to myself that it was possible to do this for longer extended periods of time because this hasn't happened since the summertime things were a little bit different structurally in my business then. So my kids are off of school. I decided I'm not going to work and getting be off of social media. I did not make some massive announcement. Let's be really clear there. That's the other thing I didn't do. I didn't tell everybody Hey, everybody, I'm going out of office. I'm not going to be on social media for a while. I had a couple of posts that were just auto scheduled they'd already been there but anything that was not already auto scheduled. Did not get scheduled. out. So it was what it was. I didn't do anything extra. Now the other thing here is that I had just on boarded two new clients into my communicate to elevate programme, right before Christmas, literally the week of Christmas, I was onboarding these clients. And so the clients that I've been working with already know me, we already have an established relationship. But now I'm bringing in other clients who I'm usually much more involved in the very beginning and the first couple of weeks. So I want you to just understand, this wasn't that I just tossed this over the fence to somebody else, or nothing was happening in my business, or I already had all this stuff. I just want you to know that regular life for me was kids are off of school for extended period of time, I made a vow to myself, I was not going to get on social media, I was not going to be doing work during that time, either. And I had new clients that were coming in.

Paula Shepherd  06:03

Okay. Now, what did that look like for seven days? Okay. Well, i planned out some fun things. But I made sure intentionally with my family, that I wasn't booking other things in to fill the time. See, this is what happens with high achieving people who see productivity as constant movement and momentum. And there's I know, I've talked about the power that's in the pause and taking the break, and how I used to feel a lot of anxiety just sitting in a chair, and reading and resting or watching a show on Netflix, I felt like and maybe you can relate to this, I surely hope you can, I believe that you do is that taking those breaks, we think well, I should be doing something else, or I could be doing something else. So what I didn't want to do was fill all of that time, with moments that were going to create more chaos and more busy.

Paula Shepherd  07:12

See, I want to decondition myself further from that corporate mentality of always having to do something because you're on the clock. So we scheduled some fun things. But there was also quite a bit of downtime, there was a lot of time where it was everyone having the opportunity to create their own space and their corner of the home and being able to read or taking a nap if you felt like it or taking a walk if you want it to. Literally there were no rules. And we made things up kind of as we went along maybe the night before. And in the beginning, I thought, oh, shoot, I didn't schedule posts out for these other things. Or I didn't talk to my team about X, Y and Z. And now it was too late, because I had already made this commitment to myself. And I honestly I didn't want to, I didn't want to be a fraud. I didn't want to be fraudulent to myself, I didn't want to be a fraud in the eyes of my clients either, right? Because it's really important for me to set the standard. I know that there are people that I pay attention to, or coaches that I work with or have worked with, that I'm watching what they're doing, and seeing if the words that they say are matching their actions.

Paula Shepherd  08:38

I think we're about a couple of days into the week. And I was exchanging messages with one of my teammates, we were just casually kind of cordially wishing each other happy holiday and seeing how we were doing during our break and just kind of checking on each other. And I made the comment that I hadn't scheduled anything out, I had this realisation that I had not scheduled anything out in any social media facet at all. And I wondered, oh my gosh, are people gonna know if that I'm not showing up? Are they gonna forget about me because here's the thing. It doesn't matter what level you're at, once you get to the point that you create a routine for yourself. And you're not in that routine anymore. It's a full stop. It's a full stop and you it's like running into a brick wall. And this is what happened for me. And here's what I learned. Here's what I learned. One, I learned that it didn't matter. Because I created my community, to be a community not to be the Polish show. And that was with intention, because I wanted a place for people to be able to come and share their knowledge and their value and ask their questions. And that's both in my I am becoming Facebook community, my my private, free community, and also in my client community in our private Slack channel. Everything was fine. Everyone was fine. People were reaching out to each other, they were answering questions. My team knew exactly what they were doing. They had time off, everyone was so respectful of each other. And honestly, they rested. So nothing happened in terms of communication, everything was great, everything was fine.

Paula Shepherd  10:37

So I want you to recognise that the way that you set these things up and this, this idea of consistency doesn't actually matter. If you're being true to yourself, consistency is something you create, it's not showing up every single day, at a specific time. Yes, you can do that. But you can also modify what that looks like for you. Okay, so no posts, no content.

Paula Shepherd  11:11

I'm not engaging with anyone. There's no story posting, there's no real creation, none of that was happening. I wasn't checking my email, messaging with clients, it was completely decompressing myself. And some beautiful things happen here is one, a lot of creativity, a lot of creativity was sparked, to I realised, man, I have some pretty amazing clients who genuinely can figure things out. And that's what this is all about. It's not having people that need you so badly, that they can't live without you. And you always have to give and give, but to be the person that holds a space for people and allows them to grow. Or as my one client, her word for 22 is bloom, allows them to bloom, right allows them to see the power within themselves. And that actually was mirrored in me. So I want you to understand that all of this was 100% possible, because I have set standards for myself, because I care about putting processes in place that allow me to take time whenever I need it, not just during the holidays. And the most important thing is that I care about my clients and their experience, always, always, not at the end, not just at the beginning, not when they're being sold a mere quoting into a programme.

Paula Shepherd  12:59

So I would invite you to take a day or two days to just experiment along with me. And if you are curious about what I do, in order to make sure that not only am I bringing more people into my world, the right people, but then I'm also keeping my current clients happy. And you want to learn how to create that client experience that is so absolutely mind blowing amazing that they are racing to resign with you and they want to refer you to everyone, then I'm going to be hosting a complimentary interactive experience. It's this month, it's January 17 through 21st. It's in my Facebook community clients on repeat, the link is in the shownotes. So make sure you click it there. You're going to learn how to create a client experience that maintains the clients that you have. And it lets you bring on new leads without chasing them down. You're not going to need difficult funnels, you're not going to hop through multiple Facebook groups. You don't need to scroll endlessly through your feed, you're going to be able to take these seven days off of social media or more.
