Paula Shepherd 00:01

Hi, I'm Paula Shepherd, I went to college to get a good job and make a lot of money. Back then, no one talked about doing what you love. And while I successfully climbed the corporate ladder, I felt like there was something missing. So I left the seemingly comfortable corporate world at 40 years old for the freedom of full time entrepreneurship. Today, I get to help ambitious women go from entrepreneur to competent CEO of their lives and businesses. I created this podcast to share what I've learned with you to make your journey just a little easier, and to connect you with other incredible business owners who took a chance on themselves and who they are becoming. So whether you're just getting started, are all in or just when you hear friendly voice. Come on in and sit with us. Now, let's dive in.

Paula Shepherd 01:01

Here, welcome to another episode of The confidence sessions. I'm here solo today to tell you a little story. And I just I had this moment at a birthday party with my little one. And it really made me think about how these things are right in front of us. And yet we overcomplicate everything, almost sabotaging ourselves.

Paula Shepherd 01:36

So let me give you the example. So it was at a birthday party with my my son, my youngest, and there is a pin Yatta. So if you've ever been to a birthday party like this, you know what I'm talking about. You probably are smiling right now, maybe even laughing. If you've never been to a child's birthday party with a pinata, let me just paint the scene for you. So they put on a mask. And then they spin you around, and they hand you a ridiculously large stick. And then when you are completely dizzy and wobbling. They tell you to start swinging. Yes. So imagine everyone is yelling, there's a dizzy child with a mask on and a giant stick and this thing that is swinging from a tree. And they are just taking action and they're swinging with all of their might. And yet there's zero connection with this paper mache thing filled with goodness, which it always has a bunch of really terrible candy inside but so it's right freakin there. Like it's right in front of their face. And you are watching and just hoping that they hit it. And the next kid goes and the next kid goes and the next kid goes and we're just waiting for someone to make a connection. And instead, we have a fully intact pinata. And some really dizzy disappointed kids.

Paula Shepherd 03:23

How many times have you done something in your life where it was literally right in front of you. And you were acting and moving and trying? And yet you were blindfolded. Maybe this is happening in your your business, but maybe it's happening in your life. You're working all day long, you're working 10,12 hours a day. And at the end of the day, you're not sure what you have to show for it. You're overcomplicating? If you just took the mask off, if you didn't spin around so much. If you just looked it in the eye, gave it one big swing with that big stick. all that goodness would fall out onto the ground. And you probably want candy now. This happens so often. We want it so bad.

Paula Shepherd 04:36

We're trying so hard. And the more you grow and the more your business grows, the more your relationships grow inside of your business and around your business. The more important it is for you to focus on what the most important Swing is

Paula Shepherd 05:05

another example of this would be lamenting about not having something, let's pretend it's money and you're walking down the street, and maybe you're trying to relieve some stress, because you've so worried about money. And the whole time you're stepping on bills, they're just on the ground, and you are not even focused on what you're doing, you're just literally stepping on the money, worried about how you don't have any, or how you're going to get more. So we can change our focus, and change our perspective to the thing that we want.

Paula Shepherd 05:50

Now, not saying that this is always simple, but you can choose to do it. And when we do, we take that mask off, we can see where the prize is, you take one big swing, we've saved ourselves a lot of headache. These kinds of activities, this stirring up this happens a lot in our relationships, when we're not listening. It's going to happen in your teams with culture, when you don't have something consistent. And one unified vision and mission. So I want you to just think about places, in your life, in your business, in your overall relationships, the way you treat yourself, where you're creating a whole lot of activity that is completely unnecessary. And definitely not fun. I mean, that is why when I work with my clients, when we work together, we don't just hand you the equipment with all the instructions, and then we get you all dizzy, and we blindfold you and then we let you go.

Paula Shepherd 07:19

There's a distinct to reason why we don't like for our clients to just dive into all the things and bust through it and not really pay attention. And they just are trying to get it done. And being really ambitious, almost like a college course, when we work together. It's getting you to a place where you trust yourself. Where you trust your decision. When you make the decision, you are competent enough to say I'm experimenting with this, I'm saying yes, or I'm saying no. And either way, I'm gonna learn something.

Paula Shepherd 08:01

But you're always doing it without the blindfold. You're always doing it in a way that one feels really freakin fun. But also where you get that prize in the end, whatever that success prize looks like to you. Maybe it's like an open busted pin Yatta full of candy on the ground. So just take a minute to just think, think on this. And I'd love for you to send me a message, send me a message on social media, send me an email at Paula at the courage blueprint.com. And let me know where you feel like you're doing this in your life in your business. I'm we work really diligently with business owners to ensure that they're building their business around their life and not the other way around. And truly advocating for themselves and for what they believe in.

Paula Shepherd 09:05

Because it is pretty bold, to go against the grain. And to not follow the crowd afraid to not stand in that group of kids waiting to put the blindfold on and spin around and get dizzy and hit the thing. You want to be able to say, Yeah, you know what, I'm going to pass on the mask. I'll just take the stick. That's the mentality that I want you to take. That is the mindset that I want you to adopt. And today and tomorrow, and the next day, I want your vision to be how can I go against the grain to meet my level of success? And my big, amazing vision.

Paula Shepherd 09:55

All right. Well, that's it for this week. I will see you next week with Another guest on another episode of The confidence sessions.
